Transitioning Your Skincare Regimen For Fall

While the weather here in North Carolina may still be giving off Summer vibes, we think it’s as good a time as ever to touch on the topic of transitioning your skincare regimen for Fall.

While Fall brings a lot of beauty with it, it can leave us with skin in desperate need of hydration due to the cooler, drier temperatures. So how do we prepare our skin for the change?

Check-in with your esthetician:

While routine facials are always beneficial for the skin, the most important one of all is during the transition from Summer to Fall. Your esthetician can asses any damage that may have been caused during the Summer, and come up with a treatment plan to help repair and heal the skin. They can also discuss with you what products would work best for your skin type and help you to choose accordingly.

Exfoliate:

While this is an important step in your skincare routine year-round, it is especially important to do this at the beginning of Fall. During the Summer, your skin produces more oil and sweat, which once mixed with dead skin cells can then clog your pores and result in dry, flaky skin. If this layer of dead skin cells are not properly exfoliated, it can cause your moisturizers to sit on-top of the skin instead of absorbing deep into the layers of the epidermis like they need to.

The Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant from Eminence is one of our all time favorites because of its delicious smell and the fact that you can control how abrasive of an exfoliation you’d like, depending on how much powder you use.

We also love the Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser from Eminence as an option for those of you with sensitive skin, or if you are more on the dry side and need something less stripping. This cleanser uses enzymes to exfoliate the skin, meaning the dead skin cells are being dissolved rather than being physically scrubbed away like you’re probably used to.

Choose hydrating products:

Cooler weather tends to leave our skin feeling dry, tight, and in desperate need of nourishment, even if you’re someone whose skin is on the oilier side. It’s important to incorporate products into your regimen that will be both thick in texture, and contain ingredients that will provide deep hydration, such as Hyaluronic Acid, which helps the skin to retain more moisture.

Products that are on the heavier side will be able to hold in moisture and will act as a protective barrier against environmental factors- such as using a heater inside your house or car, exposing your skin to extreme temperature changes from being outside vs inside, and the lack of moisture in the air when the weather is cold.

The Firm Skin Acai moisturizer from Eminence is a great option, as it contains Hyaluronic Acid and is pretty thick in texture- although you can simply add a few drops of water to it to thin it out a bit. It also contains anti-aging properties and smells like a yummy pie!

We also highly recommend the Avocado & Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream from Pai, or the Bless Balm from Leahlani!

Bonus tip:

You can also help your skin retain more moisture by sleeping with a humidifier at night. This will help to pull more moisture both into the air and into your skin, and will help to lessen the need for additional skincare products. Vitruvi’s Stone Diffusers are a great choice, as they double as both an essential oil diffuser and a humidifier.

Make friends with oils:

These can be especially beneficial during the Fall and Winter, as they are usually packed full of extra hydrating ingredients, and can make up for what your moisturizer may not be able to do. We suggest finding an oil with extra nourishing ingredients, such as Rosehip Oil, and layering a thick, hydrating moisturizer on-top. The moisturizer will act as a barrier for any products applied underneath it, and will help to make sure they stay deep within the skin.

Rosehip Oil is a great choice because it is rich in Omega’s, which help to hydrate, brighten, and boost collagen formation in the skin. It can also help erase any hyperpigmentation on the skin, which is usually caused due to overexposure to the sun during Summer.

Interested in adding this ingredient to your skincare regimen? We highly recommend Pai’s Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil!

Don’t strip the skin:

Oils are fantastic moisturizers, but did you know they can also provide a deep cleanse without stripping the skin of its necessary oils? This is why oil cleansers are such a huge hit during this time of year! These will help to hydrate and nourish the skin, as well as gently cleanse off any dirt, oil, and make-up, all without leaving you feeling dry and tight. Starting off with a cleanser that strips the skin can cause you to then use more moisturizer afterwards, so switch to something gentle and hydrating to save some money down the road!

Our top pick is the Botanical B Enzyme Cleansing Oil from One Love Organics. It contains papaya, pumpkin, and sunflower oils which all boost moisture and provide a deep cleanse without stripping the skin. The fruit enzymes inside will help to gently exfoliate and even out skin tone, leaving you with a glowing, radiant complexion.
