Goldenseal is a perennial plant native to eastern North America and was first used by Cherokee Indians for its medicinal properties. Its healing properties are thanks to alkaloids (naturally occurring, organics compounds) that provide calming and healing effects. These alkaloids are known as berberine, canadine, and hydrastine.
Berberine provides most of the medicinal benefits found in Goldenseal and is also responsible for its vibrant, orange hue (which also very easily stains clothing and fabric, so be mindful of this!) It is one of the main reasons that this plant is able to fight acne and heal stubborn skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. The natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties from this alkaloid allow it to calm redness and fight acne-causing bacteria. Its natural astringent properties help to stimulate blood flow to the epidermis of the skin, which leads to quicker healing of breakouts.
