What is Dermatitis?

What is it?

→ There are various forms of Dermatitis, but they all generally refer to any skin irritation or inflammation of the skin, and can vary in severity. It can include patches of dry, tight, itchy skin, tiny bumps, or a rash consisting of swollen, red skin. If provoked, the area can become flaky, more irritated, and may even lead to infection. Once you’ve experienced symptoms from dermatitis, it can be very difficult and cumbersome to overcome.

What causes it?

→ The most common form, known as “Contact Dermatitis”, is caused by using either an ingredient/allergen that is too harsh on the skin or from being exposed to an irritant that our bodies are sensitive to (i.e: Poison Ivy). We see a lot of Perioral and Periorbital Dermatitis in our treatment rooms that typically have resulted in everything from toothpaste, seasonal allergies, and overactive skincare products.

If you experience skin irritation after eating something, that would be considered “Allergic Dermatitis”, and would pin-point you to a food allergy. Another form of Dermatitis that you’re probably more familiar with is known as Eczema. This is a form that is usually inherited, although it can also be acute, and generally begins at a very young age. Eczema in certain cases can also be tied back to a dietary sensitivity. Those of you with this are aware that there is no known cure for it, but that there are many different ways to cope with it and prevent it from becoming severe.

What can provide relief?

→ Try to pinpoint the root of the issue first! If you’ve recently begun using a new product, discontinue use and see if your skin clears up. Added something new or too much of into your diet recently? Steer clear of it for a week or so and see how you’re feeling. Dermatitis can also be caused by stress, so if you’ve had a lot on your plate recently, try to carve out some time to check in with yourself and do some activities that might provide some mental relief.

Important tips for dealing with Dermatitis while it heals:

  • Check-in with your doctor so that they can verify you have dermatitis and provide you with recommendations on how to treat it. Also, have a discussion with your esthetician during your next facial as they may have some benefial recommendations for you to try.

  • Opt for warm/cool showers and baths, as hot water can dry out the skin and further irritate it

  • Keep the area hydrated and avoid scratching/rubbing it!

  • Use lotions that are geared towards sensitive skin and do not contain synthetic fragrances (Lavido’s Thera Intensive Body Cream is AMAZING for dermatitis, eczema, and even psoriasis!)

  • If the irritation occurs on the face, utilizing hydrating and nourishing ingredients such as Goldenseal, Chamomile, and Nigellia Seed Oil can help to alleviate some of the discomfort

If the issue persists or becomes more severe, we recommend checking in with a holistic practitioner. This is usually our go-to referral for skin issues, as they tend to look more inwards to figure out the source of the issue, rather than trying to attack it head-on with antibiotics or another strong form of medication.
