The Do's and Don'ts when dealing with Milia
Everyone’s skin is different, meaning everyone suffers from different skin issues and concerns. The most talked about issue tends to be acne, but did you know that what might appear to be acne or a breakout, could be something else entirely?
Milia is something that we tend to see in our treatment rooms every now and then, and it usually appears as what most would consider a whitehead on the face, lips, eyelids, or cheeks. We usually see it around the eye area and along the bridge of the nose (where you would normally see freckles show up). This condition is something that can appear at any age, but most often is found on newborns, and occurs when dry skin (keratin) becomes trapped inside the pores.
The process of removal in our treatment rooms is typically performed during a facial. This allows the esthetician adaquet time to take a look at the skin to examine where the milia is placed, and thoroughly cleanse and prep the skin for extractions. A lancet (a small metal tool with a sharp tip at the end) can be used to gently pierce through the top of the dried keratin and create an opening in the skin for extraction. If the skin looks like it is in need of something to help make this process easier, a peel or microdermabrasion enhancement can be used during the facial. Everyone’s skin situation is different, so your esthetician will always discuss your options with you prior to performing any services during your treatment.
While we always preach to never touch or pick at a breakout, we especially recommend straying from this with Milia, as they are much more difficult to extract from the skin, and scarring and damage can easily be done when attempting to remove them at home. Our estheticians are specially trained to work with the skin in a gentle and safe manner while still effectively treating any concerns.
